Embryonic pattern formation without morphogens.

چکیده
One of the earliest and most-fundamental pattern- formation events in embryonic development is endoderm and mesoderm specification. In sea urchin embryos, this process begins with blimp1 and wnt8 gene expression at the vegetal pole as soon as embryonic transcription begins. Shortly afterwards, wnt8/blimp1 expression spreads to the adjacent ring of mesoderm progenitor cells and is extinguished in the vegetal-most cells. A little later, the ring of wnt8/blimp1 activity moves out of the mesoderm progenitors and into the neighboring endoderm cells. Remarkably, this moving ring of gene expression has now been shown to be controlled entirely by transcriptional cis-regulatory logic.1.

A network of secreted proteins that interact with each other in the extracellular space regulates embryonic morphogenesis. Mathematical modeling offers an excellent opportunity to understand how morphogens signal and self-regenerate pattern.
متن کاملA Mechanochemical Model for Embryonic Pattern Formation: Coupling Tissue Mechanics and Morphogen Expression
Motivated by recent experimental findings, we propose a novel mechanism of embryonic pattern formation based on coupling of tissue curvature with diffusive signaling by a chemical factor. We derive a new mathematical model using energy minimization approach and show that the model generates a variety of morphogen and curvature patterns agreeing with experimentally observed structures. The mecha...

PROBLEM DEFINITION In biology, embryological development of the structure of an organism or limb is referred to as morphogenesis. As a result of morphogenesis, complex shapes and patterns can form starting from just a single cell. Two main mechanisms that contribute to the embryo’s development are cell movement and cell specialization based on cell position. These mechanisms are influenced by s...

Many aspects of metazoan morphogenesis find parallels in the communal behavior of microorganisms. The cellular slime mold D. discoideum has long provided a metaphor for multicellular embryogenesis. However, the spatial patterns in D.d. colonies are generated by an intercellular communication system based on diffusible morphogens, whereas the interactions between embryonic cells are more often m...
متن کاملCollective Motion of Cells Mediates Segregation and Pattern Formation in Co-Cultures
Pattern formation by segregation of cell types is an important process during embryonic development. We show that an experimentally yet unexplored mechanism based on collective motility of segregating cells enhances the effects of known pattern formation mechanisms such as differential adhesion, mechanochemical interactions or cell migration directed by morphogens. To study in vitro cell segreg...
